Grave

Grave

Grave is an inverted, shroud-like form that rises against gravity, drawing on the vertical burial of Margery Hilton. The draped surface retains the suggestion of a body within it, with a pronounced curve indicating the position of the head forced into the ground. By reversing the orientation of the shroud, the work disrupts the logic of burial as downward movement, instead presenting it as a suspended and unresolved state. The fabric becomes a site of containment and tension, where the body is both held and displaced. In this way, the work positions burial as a spatial and material operation, in which control is enacted through the positioning and fixing of the body.
